ทุ่งมะขามหย่อง ตั้งอยู่ที่ตำบลบ้านใหม่ อำเภอบางบาล จังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา เป็นที่ราบลุ่มแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา เป็นบริเวณที่น้ำท่วมขังในฤดูน้ำหลาก เมื่อ พ.ศ.2091 หลังจากที่สมเด็จพระมหาจักรพรรดิขึ้นครองราชย์ได้ 7 เดือน พระเจ้าหงสาวดีตะเบงชะเวตี้ยกกองทัพเข้ามาทางด่านพระเจดีย์สามองค์ เมืองกาญจนบุรี ถึงกรุงศรีอยุธยาเมื่อวันเสาร์ ขึ้น 5 ค่ำ เดือน 4 แล้วตั้งค่ายล้อมพระนคร 4 ค่าย คือค่ายพระเจ้าหงสาวดี ตั้งอยู่ที่บ้านกุ่มดวง ค่ายบุเรงนองตั้งอยู่ที่ตำบลเพนียด ค่ายพระเจ้าแปรตั้งอยู่ที่บ้านใหม่มะขามหย่อง ค่ายพระยาพะสิมตั้งอยู่ที่ทุ่งประเชดหรือทุ่งวรเชษฐ์ ครั้นวันอาทิตย์ขึ้น 6 ค่ำ เดือน 4 สมเด็จพระมหาจักรพรรดิ พร้อมด้วยพระมเหษี คือสมเด็จพระมหาสุริโยทัย ซึ่งแต่งพระองค์เยี่ยงพระมหาอุปราช และพระราชโอรสพระราชธิดา คือ พระราเมศวร พระมหินทร์ พระบรมดิลก ทรงช้าง ยกกองทัพไปยังทุ่งภูเขาทอง หมายจะลองกำลังศึก กองทัพกรุงศรีอยุธยาปะทะกับกองทัพพระเจ้าแปรซึ่งเป็นกองหน้าที่ทุ่งมะขามหย่อง พระมหาจักรพรรดิ์ทรงกระทำยุทธหัตถีกับพระเจ้าแปร แต่พลายแก้วจักรพรรดิพระคชาธารของสมเด็จพระมหาจักรพรรดิ์ถลำไปข้างหน้ารั้งไว้ไม่อยู่ พระเจ้าแปรได้ทีจึงเบนช้างไล่ตาม สมเด็จพระศรีสุริโยทัยเกรงพระสวามีจะเป็นอันตรายจึงไสช้างทรงพลายสุริยกษัตริย์เข้าขวางไว้ ช้างพระเจ้าแปรได้ล่างใช้งาเสยข้างสมเด็จพระศรีสุริโยทัยแหงนหงาย พระเจ้าแปรจึงจ้วงฟันด้วยพระแสงของ้าวต้องพระอังสากระทั่งราวพระถันสิ้นพระชนม์บนคอช้าง พระราเมศวร กับพระมหินทร์ ขับช้างเข้ากันพระศพพระราชมารดานำกลับพระนครได้ ที่นี่ไช่ทุ่งมะขามหย่อง..เนี่ย
